Location

Vredendal, situated in the Green Fringe of the Olifants River Valley, borders on the southern tip of Namaqualand, the northern part of the Boland and is recognized to be part of the West Coast.

According to tradition, the town got its name from a peace settlement between two fighting parties round about the 17th century. This tradition of peace and harmony continues in the modern day time as reflected by the community of Vredendal.

Vredendal is situated on part of the old Vreedensdaal farm that dates back to 1748, but only recieved town status in 1944.

The town is advanced and modern, with a fully developed infrastructure that includes a modern airfield, shopping centres, easy access to highways and therefore serves as base from where trips to Namaqualand, West Coast and the Cederberg mountains can be undertaken.

The community rely soundly on its established farming community where especially wine-growing, vegetable-growing and more recent tunnel-growing reign supreme.

In summer time, the average day temperature amounts to 31 degrees Celsius whilst a more modest 19 degrees reflects the average winter temperature.

Visitors to the town can also take a delight in a variety of restaurants, sights worth seeing and especially a diversity of wildlife and of course the unique wealth of flowers.

As if this is not enough, our town has no less than two wine cellars for the connoisseur, a variety of guest houses where professional service is a way of living, to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Sights worth seeing/things to do include the wine route – walking trails – Strandfontein – Doring Bay – Herenlogement – Succulent nursery – Radio museum – Van Rhyn museum – Maskam mountain – Papendorp – Mouth of Olifants River – Bushman Cave.
